Remembrance of Norma Ugene Sutherland

There is a time to be born and a time to die. So was it for Norma Ugene Sutherland. Norma first saw the light of day on September 11th 1948 to mother Girzel Malcolm and father George Sutherland. She was born in Mt. Salem Montego Bay, St. James, Jamaica, West Indies. She was the first born of her parents.

Norma, as she was affectionately called by many,  attended her church regularly, and was a generous contributor when she was able. As a young child she attended primary school at Mt. Salem Primary after which she attended Montego Bay high school. After graduating she applied for a job at Cornwall Regional Hospital in Montego Bay to work as a filing clerk. Shortly after her hire, she was promoted to work in the Medical records department for many years where she excelled at her work.

Norma met and fell in love with her late husband Stamma Haughton. Their unions produced one son, Richard Haughton. The family soon Migrated to the  United States for better opportunities. Unfortunately the  marriage did not work for long and they decided to separate. Norma was a very proud and independent woman, who believed in working hard to achieve her goals. After her separation she took her son Richard and moved to Florida where she went back to school at Florida International University studying Nursing. Norma obtained her Bachelors in Nursing and applied for a job at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida. She worked there for many years and decided to continue in her nursing profession and went back to the University of Miami where she obtained her Master's degree. Norma took her Nurses Practitioner Exam and passed it with flying colors while she was working at Jackson North Hospital.

Norma met the love of her life Albert Jarret "AKA Mike". They were best friends until death. Norma worked at Jackson North until sickness took over and she was   confined to bed. Whenever we spoke she would always speak about the love of God. She assured me that it was well between herself and God! I would frequently sing the songs " I am not my own I belong to Jesus" and " Without God I would be nothing I would be like a ship without a sail." She would reassure me by saying to me, "my sister I know God is good to me!"

On Tuesday the 8th of February 2022, our friend and sister Norma succumbed to ill health and her sun finally set. She is survived by her son Richard Haughton; three brothers Errol Sutherland, Derrick Sutherland and Donald Sutherland; one sister Olive Massop; one step-sister Jasmine Nugent; one brother-in-law , sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Norma could not stay another day to laugh or cry. She found that peace at the close of the day. She is now free.
