Obituary

CALVIN EMANUEL MAYES was born September 22, 1935, in

Kingstree, South Carolina to the late Sam Peter and Veneta Mayes. He

departed on October 9, 2021, at 86 years of age. Calvin in his early

years attended school in Williamsburg and Berkeley County and

worshiped at Goodwill African Freewill Baptist Church in Sandy Bay,

SC.

Calvin first laid eyes on his wife Eliza Ann Scott Greene Mayes at nine

years of age in St. Stephens, SC. They picked cotton and tobacco and

worked together. After years apart, they reunited and married August

17, 1985. From this union, no children were born. Calvin and Eliza

began worshiping at Metropolitan M.B.C. and later joined Holy Faith

M.B.C. where he was an active member until he transitioned.

Calvin relocated to Miami, FL at 18 years old working construction and

then changed occupation to the International Longshoreman's

Association, Local 1416 where he met checkerboard friends. Calvin

and his brothers shared a passion for checkers and dominos. He

retired after 19 years of service. In his spare time after retirement,

checkers became his pastime with Rudy and Aaron (Linebacker). One

of his favorite hobbies was singing and harmonizing with his brothers

Joseph, Phillip, Melvin, and Timothy. With a mother as an evangelist

and his father being a deacon, they would travel around singing. They

would turn their family reunions out!

Calvin leaves to cherish and is survived by his loving wife of 36 years

Eliza Ann Mayes (Miami, FL), his brother James T. Mayes (St. Stephen,

SC), Sister Willa Mae Chisolm (Moncks Corner, SC); and three

brothers-in-law Johnny Arthur Scott (Gloria)of Moncks Corner, SC, and

Carlisle Scott (Celestine) and Junior Lee Scott both of St. Stephen, SC

and a host of stepchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins
